Week 5 NFL Surprise: Eagles Fall to Broncos and Bills Succumb to Patriots

NFL Action

The final pair of undefeated squads in the NFL saw their perfect records broken during the fifth week as the Philadelphia Eagles and Buffalo Bills endured surprising losses on their own turf.

Denver's football team evolved from dark horses to front-page news thanks to an spectacular comeback victory against the current Super Bowl champions Philadelphia, before hopping on a flight for Sunday's overseas contest.

The New England Patriots then visited Buffalo and ended the Bills' undefeated start with a statement win of their own in their first primetime game in a full year.

Baltimore's team suffered a third straight defeat - their defensive unit's woes could be terminal for their play-off aspirations - while the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts, and Detroit celebrated decisive victories on yet another eventful Sunday.

Denver Downs Champions

It wasn't just beating the Super Bowl champions, but the manner of their comeback from 14 points down that made Denver's win by 21-17 in Philadelphia such a defining achievement.

The Eagles had secured 10 contests consecutively, 12 straight on home turf and 20 out of 21 total before Denver's signal-caller Bo Nix engineered two scoring drives in the final five minutes and a last-minute three-pointer.

The Eagles are now 4-1 but there is significant concern about their offensive unit, which ranks as one of the worst in the NFL. Receiver DaVonta Smith says they are not "on the same page" with QB Jalen Hurts.

Denver's defence, which sacked Hurts on six occasions, had much to contribute with it, and, together with a genuine franchise quarterback in Nix and top head coach in Sean Payton, they possess all the components to launch a legitimate playoff push.

Denver meet the New York Jets at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Patriots on National TV Shock Buffalo

If Denver's win was somewhat anticipated, few predicted New England marching into Buffalo and beating Josh Allen's Bills, but they did so with tremendous resilience.

A first primetime game for the rookie quarterback delivered a star-making showing as he led a decisive scoring drive in the final moments to secure victory 23-20.

The young QB was tough and executed accurate passes at crucial moments, many to former Bills receiver Stefon Diggs, who delivered an outstanding performance for their coach's side.

Vrabel was anticipated to turn things around in New England, but such a significant victory arrived earlier than most expected.

New England Defensive Unit

The Patriots defence contained the Buffalo Bills attack during their surprising road victory.

Ravens Play-off Hopes Over?

The season is turning into a nightmare for the Ravens, who were missing a host of defensive stars as they were dominated 44-10 by Houston's team.

It matched their largest home defeat, and falling to 1-4 for the season means one of the pre-season Super Bowl contenders have just a small chance of making the play-offs.

Baltimore are currently 4-11 playing without superstar quarterback Lamar Jackson, who was hurt, but the real issue is an exceptionally poor defense that is the real problem - for a franchise that have been synonymous with defensive toughness over the years.

Houston coasted to the win as Baltimore became the first team in the Super Bowl era to concede at least 37 points in four of their first five contests. Their campaign is already in tatters.

Detroit, Tampa and Indianapolis Reach 4-1

Detroit's backfield tandem Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery scored a touchdown in one contest for the 14th time - a joint NFL mark - as the Lions defeated Cincinnati 37-24.

The win made it four wins in a row for the highest-scoring team Detroit, but not one against teams with positive records.

A more surprising 4-1 side are Indianapolis. With their star running back running in three touchdowns in their 40-6 hammering of the Las Vegas Raiders and quarterback Daniel Jones looking like a new man, they will be a tough match for any team.

Tampa Bay joined the 4-1 club with a mesmeric 38-35 win in Seattle in which both teams exchanged nine touchdowns in 10 sparkling drives before Seattle cracked first with a final-minute turnover.

The kicker booted the game-winner with the last kick of the contest for his second occasion this season. All four of the Bucs' wins have been clinched in the final moments.

Saints and Titans Receive Assistance for First Wins

Given how New Orleans and Tennessee Titans started the season, they needed help to get their first wins, and they received ample due to several comical mistakes from New York and Arizona Cardinals.

After a good start from first-year player Jaxson Dart, the Giants committed five turnovers - one was decisively returned for a touchdown - while also allowing Rashid Shaheed to score on an 87-yard catch and run as the Saints prevailed 26-14.

Arizona were more disastrous as they blew a 21-3 lead primarily thanks to two huge mistakes.

First, Emari Demercado unexplainably fumbled the ball just before reaching the end zone for a long score.

More disastrous was to come when the Cardinals intercepted Cam Ward close to their own goal line, then fumbled the ball across the goal line for Tyler Lockett to recover as Tennessee snapped a 10-game slide with a narrow victory.

Seahawks Receiver

Tyler Lockett registered one of the most farcical scores witnessed this season.

That left the Jets as the only winless squad left in the league after their bruising 37-22 defeat by the Cowboys.

The quarterback became the initial athlete in NFL history to eclipse 4K through the air and 1K on the ground in his first 20 career games as he came back from being hurt to guide the Washington Commanders to a notable 27-10 win at the Los Angeles Chargers.

Rico Dowdle was the standout performer for the Carolina Panthers with 206 rushing yards in their exciting 27-24 win over the Miami Dolphins.
