Steam Next Fest is in full swing, and enthusiasts have encountered plenty of engaging independent titles. Yet, one stands out for its quirky concept. Called Unko Technica, this old-school styled side-scrolling game lets you play a protagonist that is truly a piece of poop trying to travel to a commode. For those curious, "Unko" is Japanese for "poop."

How you interact is simple: just use a one button to leap. Throughout numerous levels, battle boss fights and visit a store to acquire skins for your fecal avatar.

Plan your movements precisely, as a error requires beginning again. Leap using air pockets to propel your character to new heights, cross crumbling surfaces, and interact with triggers to reveal secret routes. Earn coins for buying more difficult stages where the action intensifies.

Graphically, the experience features eye-catching environments and a killer background music. The retro graphics with shifting geometric shapes could recall players of beloved games like Earthbound.

Although difficult to recall previous releases where you play as a piece of feces, gaming frequently featured fecal matter. For instance, in Death Stranding, players craft explosives from protagonist waste. Examples include Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ feces as plant food. Unsurprisingly, fecal references shows up a lot in the role-playing game The Stick of Truth.

Regardless of its goofy premise, Unko Technica has already earned impressive awards, including taking top honors at a major publisher's game competition in 2023. This trial version is ready at present on Steam, with the complete version scheduled to arrive on computers in the fall.
