The Mystery Within the Briefcase Henry Opens in Stranger Things?

During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for freedom in the pivotal sixth episode has them experience a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a discovery that may just hold the means to overcome him for good.

Heads Up: The following reveals crucial plot points for the concluding episodes.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. A clever observation a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies outside of the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

In keeping with mysteries this season, the full story behind the mine shaft incident is detailed in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.

A Naval Mystery and Secret Science

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who emerged in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to sell to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. This spy in the cavern was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. At that moment, Henry is already bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry was transported in the Abyss, returning after half a day with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he struggles with the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

The Power of Fear

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine highlights how utterly horrifying the encounter was for him. While he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has overcome his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what his enemy truly fears, and this may grant a critical advantage in the ultimate battle that awaits.
