The Facts Concerning Jihad al-Shamie, the Manchester Synagogue Attacker

To his neighbors, Jihad al-Shamie seemed to lead a relatively normal life: a recent parent who lifted weights and frequently blocked parking spaces near the residence he lived with his mother and father.

The son of an emergency surgeon, Shamie seemed to have a positive upbringing, with brothers coming after him who went on to have promising professions in technology and pharmaceutical sciences.

However, after his death after carrying out a deadly antisemitic attack, a fuller picture has come to light. It has been learned that Shamie was previously declared insolvency, found guilty of minor offenses and an accused of sexual assault when he set upon worshippers marking Yom Kippur.

Early Years Appearing Ordinary

Jihad al-Shamie reportedly enjoyed a typical early life in Manchester during the nineties. In home videos recorded to send to his grandfather in Syria, he pets a kitten in the family garden, telling his father he hopes to provide nourishment; in different footage he pushes his brother on a playground equipment in the yard.

Shamie grew up with two younger brothers, the family enjoying days out to local amusement center, Chester zoo and the shopping complex, and the children participated in school nativity plays in December.

In their previous residence, across from the medical facility where Shamie’s parent was employed, local residents recalled a “ordinary kid” who was part of a “nice family””.

He would play well with other children on the neighborhood, and the sole peculiar aspect someone remembered was that he spent most of the day playing on a handheld computer game – to the point that it made his eyes blink.

“They appeared normal, the father worked over the road, he appeared pleasant enough, regularly conversed with me. The household appeared respectable, the mom often talked with neighbors. He engaged with electronic devices, he’d play it all day, he had a noticeable blinking habit.”

‘A Typical Individual’

Neighbors on Shamie’s quiet suburban street in Prestwich described him as a “straightforward, ordinary lad” who would regularly train in his outdoor space, practicing strength training, with someone noting he regularly parked his car “badly” in front of her home.

The family are believed to have moved to the attached residence, about two miles from the site of the violence, about 15 years ago, when Shamie was nearing twenty years old. During the siblings' childhood, the relatives made their home in the neighboring district.

Son of a Trauma Surgeon

His father, Faraj al-Shamie, worked globally as a trauma surgeon, practicing in dangerous regions worldwide, including in Iraq, Afghanistan and South Sudan. He previously worked for NGOs, including the International Committee of the Red Cross, and trained with the eminent surgeon David Nott in the Iraqi city of Mosul.

Household's Position

Faraj al-Shamie has separated the relatives from his offspring's assault, sharing a statement on Facebook that stated: “Reports emerging from Manchester regarding the terrorist attack directed against a Hebrew temple has been a deeply disturbing for our family.

“Our family unit both domestically and internationally explicitly rejects this heinous act, which affected unarmed, ordinary people. We fully distance ourselves from this attack and express our deep shock and sorrow concerning the incident. We offer our condolences to the victims and their families, and we wish them fortitude and solace.”

Personal Life

Shamie had previously worked as a tutor, instructing in language and coding. Still, documentation indicated he lacked employment in state bankruptcy files which revealed he sought financial assistance the previous September while staying in the family residence. Just one month later, his parent shared a photograph of him with a recently born child, labeling the image “Excellent Addition to the Family”.

Criminal Past

Investigators reported that Shamie had been released pending rape allegations when he drove his small black Hyundai into worshippers at Heaton Park shul. It is not known when the supposed assault occurred but it is thought to have happened within the current year. He was under active investigation by local law enforcement.

He had faced legal issues previously, as per informants, who said he had a criminal record for other less-serious offences. He was however not tracked by anti-terrorism units or security services until Thursday.

Extremist Development

In the hours since the attack, investigators have been pulling apart every strand of Shamie’s life to comprehend what factors led him on the path to terror. That includes examining phone records, verifying contacts and acquaintances, and reviewing his digital footprint.

He seemed to have been obsessed on the difficulties facing Islamic communities in certain Middle Eastern regions, particularly in recent years in Gaza. An online presence, thought to be his has a firearm as its main image, paired with botanical elements, and seemingly a holy text.

A single post on the inactive social media profile mentions the Manbij explosion in Syria in 2016, and appeals to divinity to “confront individuals who harmed and murdered them.”
