Ruben Amorim Pledges Not to Resign at Manchester United but Accepts Dismissal Awaits If Results Don't Get Better

The Manchester United manager has stated emphatically that he will not step down from his role in spite of the club's ongoing struggles, but he concedes that he faces dismissal if performances do not turn around.

Current Challenges & Table Position

The head coach has collected just 34 points across his 33 Premier League games, with the club currently sitting in 14th place in the table after a 15th-place finish the previous campaign. The Red Devils have secured just two victories from the first seven games this season, which includes a shock League Cup defeat against Grimsby and a recent defeat to Brentford. This result extended Amorim's quest to secure his first consecutive league wins since taking over nearly a year previously.

Up next, Sunderland FC travel to Old Trafford, where another loss could increase the pressure on the Portuguese coach.

The Manager's Position Regarding Resignation

Questioned on if he would consider resigning, Amorim responded: “No, that's a decision of the board. I cannot take that step. Sometimes I have those thoughts because losing is hard, not to create positive momentum. It is so frustrating after you create the momentum, go to the following match, something happens. That feeling sometimes hurts me deeply. Also the squad and especially the coaching team here. Yet it isn't my choice and I believe it would be really hard to walk away unless I don’t given everything to pursue my career at United.”

“It is a dream to be here and I want to stay here and I'm determined to fight for this. However the issue at present what makes me suffer is losing matches, not the fear of losing my job. You worry about losing your role if you have to cover expenses but I don't feel that pressure.”

Explaining the Formation Tactics

The 40-year-old additionally offered an impassioned defence of the three-at-the-back system, which has been the focus of much scrutiny. Amorim has deployed this setup in every game yet it has so far failed to provide steady results desired.

“No one here is naive,” he said. “We understand that we need results to advance our plans. We'll reach a point where it's untenable for all involved since this is a massive club with many partners, with two owners. So it’s hard, the balance is really hard. My aim is to see the side – winning or losing – playing consistently but we're failing to do so.”

Amorim noted that United had played various formations with past coaches, yet to no avail. “We need perform the same way, with the same intensity, with the same intensity, with the required concentration. If we do that, it doesn’t matter what the system is.”

Plans for Winter Friendlies

Amorim confirmed plans to arrange high-revenue winter exhibition games in order to increase revenue missed by not qualifying for Europe. “We have to do it as we anticipated after missing out on Europe,” he said. “We have our fans and our budget and we want to connect with supporters around the world.”

Tribute to Manchester Incident

Manchester United will observe a moment of silence on Saturday with the squad sporting black armbands in tribute after the tragic incident at a Manchester synagogue earlier this week. Manchester City will also pay respects for their league and women's matches over the coming days.
