McLaren Blames Opposing Racers for Piastri-Norris Collision

Wheel flies off racing car after collision between team drivers

A wheel comes loose from the car of Lando Norris after he collided with fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the beginning of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

McLaren Formula 1 leaders Brown and Stella blamed opposing racers for the crash between Oscar Piastri and Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint race.

Piastri, leading his teammate in the standings by twenty-two points, bounced into his team-mate after hitting the Hulkenberg.

The crash forced out both team drivers out of the event, along with Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, who was on the inner side of the Sauber driver.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Incident

Zak Brown, the team's CEO, told broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "inexperienced", stating: "Obviously Hulkenberg made contact with Piastri and he had no business being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we were denied the opportunity to race."

"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with justful prudence. Go to the initial turn, ensure you don't damage other drivers and carry on."

McLaren indicated that the team principal was pointing to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

However, former champion Damon Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he thought the Australian had not demonstrated enough awareness of the dangers of the opening turn of an F1 race when he decided to cut back to try to overtake Norris.

The Australian had a stronger launch than Norris and initially challenged on the outer side on the uphill entry to the corner.

However he then cut back in an attempt to get a advantage on Norris on the way out, only to collide with the Sauber driver.

Racer Comments After the Incident

Piastri said: "Less than perfect but I did not see what occurred, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both quite distant from the corner apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. A shame."

Norris said: "I just got hit, right? I did nothing wrong. Behind us things happened and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to look a bit more carefully. It's more drivers further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I thought I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some cars came very fast from the outside switching back and then I was there in the center."

The Sauber driver, who had earned a season-best fourth, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the trash. Just chaotic."

"Oscar steered inward pretty forcefully trying to get the undercut and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Fernando challenge on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Oscar turned in and the collision was inevitable."

Post-Crash and Team Response

McLaren will analyze the incident with their drivers but only after the event weekend. Both vehicles needed significant repairs before grand prix qualifying at 10 PM BST on the weekend.

Stella said: "In general displeased but we accept it, we are now concentrating on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."

"We are in a competitive place from our competitiveness point of view so I trust we have the opportunity to compete, compete fairly and capitalise on our performance."

"Championship points are the most important thing, I don't want to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A little more care would be beneficial for all involved."

Standings Impact

The sprint event was won by the Verstappen, who gained ground on both team racers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind the Australian and 33 adrift of Norris.

Stella said: "The consequence is what the numbers show - we lost eight points with both racers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two skilled drivers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the championship one event at a time.
