We are checking images and video shared this morning that purport to show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive blast that authorities in Russia state fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to check the site of where the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building captured in the video.

Locating additional structures, streetlights and the road configuration verified the exact location the footage were taken.

Additionally, we verified that the videos were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
