Brave Train Staff Member Suffers Life-Threatening Wounds Amid Mass Knife Attack on High-Speed Service

A courageous train staff member who intervened to protect passengers during a multiple knife incident on a express train has sustained life-threatening wounds, police confirmed on Sunday.

Particulars of the Frightening Incident

Surveillance footage allegedly depicts the staff member trying to halt the assailant as the train traveled between Peterborough and Huntingdon in the county. Bystanders recounted a terrifying 14-minute period after the train left Peterborough, with injured victims fleeing through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, remains in detention for interrogation. Police announced a major incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in central London.

Crisis Reaction and Aftermath

The event on Saturday night led to 11 people being cared for in medical facilities after the train made an unscheduled stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have now been released from medical care.

A witness filmed the suspect brandishing a large knife and being shot with a Taser as he faced police on the platform. He was reportedly heard shouting, "End my life, end my life."

“This was a horrific attack that has had a wide impact. My thoughts and those of everyone in British Transport Police are with those injured and their families – particularly the brave member of train personnel whose family are being assisted by specialist officers,” said a senior police official.

Labor Response and Appeals for Action

Rail unions were quick to commend employees and demand increased action. A union official stated he would be “seeking immediate meetings with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the strongest possible support, resources and effective procedures in operation”.

A different association leader urged the rail company and authorities “to move swiftly to review security, to help the impacted employees, and to make sure nothing like this happens again”.

Driver Praised for Rapid Action

The train driver who halted the service at Huntingdon was described as being “deeply affected” but “well”, and has been commended by union officials for doing “precisely what was needed”.

“He didn’t halt the service in the center of two stations where it’s clearly difficult for the first responders to access, but he carried on going until he got to Huntingdon, where the assistance was almost waiting,” explained a association representative.

Further Information

Police stated they received the first distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness recounted at first thinking if the situation was a holiday prank, but quickly realized from individuals' expressions that it was real.

Authorities have stated there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a terror-related attack and have requested the community to come forward with any additional information.

Train operations on the impacted line are expected to have delays until Monday, with travelers advised to postpone their travel where possible.

Individuals with details that could help the investigation are encouraged to reach police by texting a designated number with a reference code.
